JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he desires to call a brand new settlement within the Golan Heights after President Donald Trump out of gratitude for the White Home’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the territory.
Netanyahu was touring the Golan Heights on Tuesday and mentioned there was a “want to specific our appreciation” to the president. He says he’ll advance “a decision calling for a brand new group on the Golan Heights named after President Donald J. Trump.”
Final month Trump formally acknowledged Israeli sovereignty over the territory it captured from Syria within the 1967 Mideast Conflict.
Israel annexed the mountain plateau in 1981, a transfer unrecognized by many of the worldwide group. An estimated 20,000 Israelis dwell in Golan Heights settlements, which many of the worldwide group considers unlawful.
